MAK DRDO ABD + CSIR AOP FSTP: Advanced Faecal Sludge Treatment

Human faecal matter presents a serious health hazard. Our solution: the MAK DRDO ABD + CSIR AOP Faecal Sludge Treatment Plant (FSTP). This system combines the power of DRDO’s Anaerobic Bacteria Digestion (ABD) with CSIR’s Advanced Oxidation Process (AOP) for effective and sustainable faecal sludge management.

The Technology:

  • DRDO ABD: This patented technology offers a power-free, efficient method for treating faecal matter. Anaerobic bacteria break down organic waste in specially designed tanks.
  • CSIR AOP: This advanced process provides tertiary treatment, ensuring compliance with pollution control norms.

The Process:

  1. Primary Treatment:Faecal sludge from septic tanks is discharged into receiving tanks and screened to remove large solids. The screened sludge is then diluted (1:2 ratio) with water in a dilution tank.
  2. Secondary Treatment (ABD Tank): The diluted sludge enters the three-compartment ABD tank:
    • Compartment 1: Anaerobic bacteria, supported by an immobilization matrix, begin breaking down organic matter.
    • Compartment 2: Further digestion and disintegration occur with enhanced water flow.
    • Compartment 3: Final reduction of BOD and COD, preparing the water for discharge (suitable for irrigation).
  3. Tertiary Treatment (Filtration and AOP):
    • Sand and carbon filtration remove remaining particulates, reducing TSS.
    • The AOP process disinfects and oxidizes the water. Oxygen (90% purity) is converted to ozone, which is then injected into the wastewater via a venturi system for enhanced oxidation and disinfection.

The Result: Treated water suitable for irrigation, ground discharge, toilet flushing, construction, and other non-potable uses

The Process Diagram and performance of full-scale MAK DRDO ABD + CSIR AOP FSTPprocess of 1.5 KLD Demo Plant at MAK India Limited, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu is shown in Figure and Table:

Note: The treated water can be used for dilution of the incoming sludge.Hence, no fresh water is required.

  1. Advantages/Features:
  • Low CAPEX
  • Low OPEX
  • Does not require any power for digestion
  • Odour Free operation
  • No Chemicals needed
  • Low operating & Maintenance Cost
  • One time filling of Bio Culture.
  • The water can be enhanced further through tertiary treatment like sand/carbon filtration, Advanced oxidation process(AOP) which requires minimal power consumption.
  • Low Renewal & Replacement Cost
  • The biogas produced can be utilized as a renewable energy source (biomethanation) which in turn adds carbon credit for the project.
  • It generates no sludge
  • No sludge handling and evacuation.
  • It achieves effective disinfection and oxidation without requiring additional chemicals.
  • The process is simple and straightforward, requiring only semi-skilled labor for operation.
  • The treated water meets high-quality standards suitable for reuse in irrigation and or industrial applications.
